Bio & background

Tom Scharpling is a director, writer, and producer working with Arts & Sciences since September 2013. He served as executive producer and writer on the Emmy Award-winning series Monk for eight seasons, then became head writer and co-executive producer for HBO's Divorce starring Sarah Jessica Parker. His additional television writing credits include Nathan for You, What We Do in the Shadows, Kevin Can F**k Himself, and Krapopolis. In commercial directing, Scharpling has created campaigns for Heineken, AT&T, State Farm, Expedia, NBA2K, and Jet.com. His work is characterized by high-concept narratives and cerebral comedy. As a music video director, he earned SPIN magazine's Music Video Director of the Year award in 2012. TIME magazine ranked his shot-by-shot remake of 'Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry" for Aimee Mann's "Labrador" as the #2 music video of 2012. He has directed videos for MGMT, The New Pornographers, Ted Leo, Real Estate, and Wild Flag, typically featuring celebrity cameos and parody elements. Scharpling hosts the long-running podcast The Best Show, named by Vulture as one of the ten essential comedy podcasts that shaped the genre. Rolling Stone named him one of the fifty funniest people in 2017.
