Todd Phillips is an American director, writer, and producer who built a career on R-rated studio comedies before moving into prestige drama. After leaving NYU to finish the documentary Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies, he won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Frat House (1998) and directed the Phish film Bittersweet Motel (2000). Narrative features followed under Ivan Reitman’s orbit: Road Trip (2000) and Old School (2003), then Starsky & Hutch, School for Scoundrels, the Hangover trilogy—the first winning a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy—and Due Date. He held a story credit on Borat that earned an Academy Award adapted-screenplay nomination. Later work includes War Dogs (2016) and Joker (2019), which took the Golden Lion at Venice and brought Phillips Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay; he returned for Joker: Folie à Deux (2024). Advertiser credits are limited but documented: a Pepsi commercial starring Tom Green that preceded Road Trip, and the 2012 Honda spot “Matthew’s Day Off,” a Ferris Bueller homage with Matthew Broderick. He is represented in the U.S. by Anonymous Content.
