He launched to prominence with R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" (1991), which won a Grammy and eight MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year. A graduate of Art Center College of Design, Tarsem has since directed campaigns for Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, BMW, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Nike, McDonald's, Microsoft, Sony, Samsung, and L'Oréal. His commercial work earned two Cannes Lions (Anne Klein for Wieden + Kennedy, Levi's for Bartle Bogle Hegarty), a 1996 Directors Guild of America Award, and permanent placement in MoMA's collection. Notable campaigns include Levi's "Swimmer" (1992 Cannes Silver Lion), Pepsi's 2003 gladiator spectacle with Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and Pink, the culture-shifting KIA Soul Hamsters (inducted into Madison Avenue's Advertising Walk of Fame), and Toyota's 2021 Super Bowl "Upstream" celebrating Paralympian Jessica Long.
