Bio & background

Steve Ayson is a New Zealand-born commercial director based between Los Angeles and New Zealand, working with MJZ (US/UK), Zauberberg Productions (Europe), and his own production company 3&7, which he founded in 2018. Ayson has directed major campaigns for Life360, Old Spice, LEGO, Mattress Firm, Miller Lite, Nike, Doritos, One New Zealand, and the New Zealand Transport Authority. His work for Miller Lite and Mattress Firm earned him a Directors Guild of America nomination in 2022—his fourth DGA nomination following prior recognition in 2021, 2020, 2018, and 2012 for Carlton Draught. Before directing, Ayson worked as an advertising creative, developing expertise in balancing brand messaging with artistic vision. His short film *The French Doors* won the Leopard of Tomorrow at the Locarno Film Festival in 2002. Ayson's directorial style blends sharp observational comedy, offbeat humor, and dialogue-light visual storytelling. His commercial portfolio demonstrates versatility across musical spots (Old Spice "Momsong," Life360's darkly comic musicals, LEGO's holiday choir), performance-driven comedy (Dollar Shave Club, Geico), dramatic PSA work (NZ Transport Authority's "Toll Booth"), and choreographed pieces. His work has been recognized at Cannes Lions, D&AD, One Show, Clio Awards, AICP, LIA, Ciclope, and the Andys.
