Bio & background

Alan Smith and Adam Foulkes are a British directing duo known as Smith & Foulkes, celebrated for three decades of inventive animation blending visual experimentation with deadpan humor. Royal College of Art graduates (1997), they broke through with Honda's "Grrr" (2005), which won the Cannes Grand Prix, D&AD Black Pencils, and was later named AdWeek's Ad of the Decade—making them the most awarded commercial directors in the US and Europe in 2006. Their Oscar-nominated short film *This Way Up* (2008) earned a BAFTA and Annie Award. Recent work includes Telstra's "Duet" (Cresta Gold for Outstanding Animation) and its sequel "Wherever We Go," plus campaigns for Slack, Planters, and Schneider Electric. Their technique-agnostic approach spans 2D, 3D, live-action, and mixed media, always story-first. Smith describes their aesthetic as "magic realism, or maybe logical fantasy"—worlds grounded in subverted reality where obsessive craft meets choreographed absurdity. Currently working with Riff Raff Films (UK/US) and SEDONA Productions (Australia/New Zealand as of April 2026).
