Bio & background

Michelle Savill is a New Zealand filmmaker and commercial director based in London, working with Good Oil Films (AU/NZ) and Arts & Sciences (US/UK). Her short film Ellen is Leaving won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW 2013 and Best Narrative Short at San Francisco Film Festival, while her debut feature Millie Lies Low competed at the 2022 Berlinale. In commercials, she has directed campaigns for ANZ, Steinlager, Vodafone, Sky NZ, Australian Government Department of Health, Cancer Society NZ, Medibank, Cadbury, Pet Refuge, St John, and Nike. Her work balances narrative craft with emotional intelligence, often employing humor and character-driven storytelling. She was nominated for the Cannes Lions Young Director Award in 2019 and has directed episodes of Netflix's Sex Education and HBO's Industry. A graduate of the DEGANZ Emerging Women Filmmakers Incubator and Berlinale Talent Lab, Savill has accumulated over two million online views and earned Vimeo Staff Pick Premiere honors. Her approach favors visceral, human stories rooted in authenticity and nuance, informed by her cross-cultural upbringing in the Philippines and New Zealand.
