Bio & background

Michael J Ferns is a Scottish director working with Rattling Stick in the US and UK, with additional representation through The Gate Films, Greenroom Films, and Lobster Creative. At 16, he won a Scottish BAFTA, followed by two Children's BAFTA nominations for co-creating and directing the CBBC Official Chart Show and narrative work on The Dumping Ground. In 2020, his short film Better won the Iris Prize for Best British Short. Ferns has directed campaigns for LEGO, Dove, Nespresso, Virgin, Wren Kitchens, Bet365, LinkedIn, Budweiser, Grant's Whisky, and Caledonian Sleeper, among others. His work spans public safety campaigns for Northern Ireland's Department of Justice, remote lockdown productions for LinkedIn, and multi-location international shoots across Dubai, Shanghai, Paris, and Berlin. He collaborates closely with longtime cinematographer Alistair Little to create warm, cinematic imagery shaped by classical lighting and motivated camera movement. Ferns refuses unmotivated handheld, preferring precision and expressive economy. He has worked extensively with agencies including VCCP, Rapp, AMV BBDO, and Story, and continues to develop narrative features while maintaining a commercial practice characterized by authentic performances and emotional storytelling.
