Marlies van der Wel is a Dutch animator and illustrator based in Amsterdam, known for a distinctive collage-based technique she calls "digital cut-out animation." Graduating from the University of Art in Utrecht in 2006, she has worked on commercial and personal projects since 2007. Her short films—including Emily (2018), Jonas and the Sea (2015), and Coot (2023)—have screened at Berlinale, Toronto, and Sundance. Emily was the Dutch submission for the Academy Awards in 2018. Van der Wel's painstaking process weaves drawings, textures, and found objects into layered compositions animated with minimal, natural movement, creating what she describes as "big themes in small packages" with emotional clarity and understated humor. Her commercial work includes campaigns for Great Ormond Street Hospital ("Home for Christmas" via adam&eveDDB), Emirates NBD (Leo Burnett ME), United World Schools, Daflon, ESTRO Cancer Foundation, NEMO Science Museum (KesselsKramer), and Sesame Street. She joined Partizan Studio's global roster in September 2020, represented across the US, UK, and France, and is also represented in Germany by Trigger Happy Productions.
