Bio & background

Mark Gilbert is a British-born Canadian commercial director based in Whistler, British Columbia, known for casting-led comedy and performance-driven spots. He began as a stills photographer recognized by The One Show and Communication Arts, with assignments for National Geographic, Travel + Leisure, GQ, and Elle, before moving into directing. Signed with Untitled Films in January 2004, he was selected for the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase at Cannes (2004), the shots New Directors reel (2005), and Communication Arts Fresh. Pepsi Mini Cans earned Cannes and D&AD shortlists, Gold at the Bessies, Marketing Awards, and ADCC, and two ANDY Silvers; a VIFF campaign took a Clio shortlist and Marketing Awards Gold. His IKEA comedy “Start the Car!” / “Not A Mistake” was cited by TIFF among essential Canadian cinematic and advertising works. Credits include BMW “Twins,” Publicis Toronto’s Kia Soul campaign, Skyy Vodka “Claim Your Cali,” BMO “Scary Movie,” NJM Insurance’s “No Jingles or Mascots” series, EY “Paranormal,” and Kits Eyewear’s launch featured during the 2021 Super Bowl. Ovarian Cancer Canada’s “Ladyballs” (Grey Canada) won a Cannes Silver Lion in 2016 (sources also cite Bronze and a Glass shortlist). He is represented in the US by Station Film.
