Bio & background

Lulu Wang is a Chinese-born American filmmaker working with Iconoclast (US, France, Germany) who bridges cultural divides through emotionally nuanced storytelling. Born in Beijing and raised in Miami after immigrating at age 6, Wang graduated from Boston College in 2005 with degrees in literature and music before discovering filmmaking. Her breakthrough feature "The Farewell" (2019) premiered at Sundance to a 99% Rotten Tomatoes rating, earning the Independent Spirit Award for Best Feature and recognition from the American Film Institute as one of 2019's top films. Wang directed Apple's 2021 Chinese New Year campaign "The Nian," a 12-minute cinematic spot shot entirely on iPhone 12 Pro Max that blended mythology with childhood wonder, produced by TBWA/Media Arts Lab Shanghai. Most recently, she created the Amazon Prime Video series "Expats" (2024) starring Nicole Kidman, adapted from Janice Y.K. Lee's novel. Wang balances tonal complexity through camera work and framing rather than scripted jokes, using wider frames with layered action to create juxtaposition between joy and sorrow. She has proven expertise working with all-Asian casts and Mandarin dialogue while maintaining universal accessibility. A Sundance Institute Board of Trustees member since 2022 and Variety "Ten Directors to Watch" honoree, Wang operates through her company Local Time Productions.
