Bio & background

Lisa Cholodenko is an Academy Award–nominated writer-director whose work spans independent film, premium television, and branded content. She wrote and directed High Art (1998), which won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance and premiered at Cannes Directors' Fortnight, becoming a landmark of New Queer Cinema. Her follow-up Laurel Canyon (2002) also premiered at Cannes. The Kids Are All Right (2010), co-written with Stuart Blumberg and starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo, earned four Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, and won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. In television, Cholodenko won both a Primetime Emmy and DGA Award for directing HBO's Olive Kitteridge (2014). She has directed episodes of Six Feet Under, The L Word, Hung, and served as executive producer and director on Netflix's Peabody Award–winning Unbelievable (2019) and Hulu's The Girl from Plainville (2022). A Columbia University MFA graduate mentored by Miloš Forman, Cholodenko began her career as an assistant editor on Boyz n the Hood before transitioning to directing. She joined Arts & Sciences for US commercial representation in November 2022, with clients including Skyy Vodka, Jaguar, and L'Oréal.
