She made history as the first woman to receive the Academy Award for Best Director for The Hurt Locker (2009), which also won Best Picture, BAFTA, and DGA awards. Her feature work spans Point Break (1991), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Detroit (2017), and the 2025 Netflix thriller A House of Dynamite, featuring Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson. In commercials, she has directed campaigns for Apple, Chanel, Mercedes, AT&T, Budweiser, Ford, Chase, Xfinity, and Army National Guard, with multiple Super Bowl spots. Her Apple spot "Hollywood in Your Pocket," shot entirely on iPhone with cinematographer Greig Fraser, earned a 2022 DGA nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials.
