Joel Kefali is a New Zealand-born director whose work spans music videos, commercials, and short films. A Unitec design graduate, he co-founded the creative studio Special Problems in 2007 before breaking into the global spotlight with Lorde's 'Royals' music video (2013), which won a MTV VMA for Best Alternative Video and has over 60 million YouTube views. His music video portfolio includes Katy Perry, Tame Impala, LCD Sound System, The Naked and Famous, and additional Lorde tracks. In commercials, Kefali has directed campaigns for Apple (Apple Watch 'Close Your Rings'), Toyota, Samsung, Telstra, Pedigree, Southern Cross Health Insurance, Te Whatu Ora, and the NZ Transport Agency's 'Doors' anti-drunk driving spot. His work has earned Gold Axis Awards for directing, cinematography, and music; a Cannes Lion for Tiger Beer/Air-Ink; Silver Clio and D&AD Yellow Pencil for Apple's 'The Whole Working From Home Thing'; and multiple Bronze Clios and Lions for Huggies. His directorial style ranges from photographic, minimal actor-focused work to colourful, design-driven spectacles, informed by his background in animation, visual art, and post-production. He is currently working with Arts & Sciences (U.S./U.K.) and Good Oil (Australia/NZ).
