James Griffiths is a writer-director whose work spans comedy commercials, network television, and features. He broke out with the 2006 short The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island—co-written with Tim Key and Tom Basden and produced by Moxie Pictures—which premiered at Toronto, won Best British Short at Edinburgh and Best Direction at NYC’s Creativity No Spot Festival, and earned a 2007 BAFTA short-film nomination. That short later expanded into the BAFTA-nominated feature The Ballad of Wallis Island, starring Carey Mulligan with Key and Basden. His Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series short Room 8 won the 2014 BAFTA for British Short Film. Advertising credits include Adidas, Barclays, Strongbow, Virgin Media, Warburtons, Clipper and 888 Bingo; an early-2000s series with Kris Marshall and Esther Hall is cited as a widely remembered blended-family campaign. Television includes multiple episodes of Showtime/BBC’s Episodes, the NBC pilot Up All Night, and episodes/pilots of Black-ish, Wrecked and Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life. He directed early Free Agents with Sharon Horgan and was lead director on season two of BAFTA-winning Bad Sisters. His 2014 feature Cuban Fury starred Nick Frost, Rashida Jones and Chris O’Dowd.
