Bio & background

Ibra Ake is a Nigerian-American director, writer, and creative director whose work spans advertising, television, and music videos. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Ake emerged from the New York photography scene—shooting for Vogue, Nylon, and New York magazine—before transitioning to directing. As Donald Glover's longtime creative director, Ake served as creative producer on the Grammy-winning "This Is America" music video (2018), executive producer on the feature film Guava Island (2019) with Rihanna, and writer-director across multiple seasons of FX's Atlanta. He directed two episodes of Amazon's Swarm (2023), including Billie Eilish's acting debut, and helmed segments of Beyoncé's Black Is King (2020), including "Brown Skin Girl," "Water," and "Keys to the Kingdom." In commercials, Ake has directed campaigns for Nike ("Play With Gratitude," "Endless Repetition," "Kobe 3 Protro"), Adidas ("Donald Glover Presents" content series), H&M (2021 "Edition" campaign starring John Boyega, presented almost entirely in Nigerian Yoruba), Spotify ("Pantheon"), and Gucci. His work emphasizes authentic representation of Black experience and cultural specificity, often blurring the line between advertising and short film.
