Hoku Uchiyama and Adam Bolt form the directing duo Hoku & Adam, working with Partizan across US, UK, and France. The pair met at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and have built a reputation for quirky, technically inventive animation-driven commercials and music videos. Hoku, a Cannes Young Director Award winner (2nd place, 2003), also directs narrative horror comedy, most recently the short film WHITCH, which premiered at SXSW 2024 and won the Midnight Short Special Jury Award. The duo's commercial roster includes Google, YouTube, Starbucks, FedEx, Whole Foods, Lowe's, and Minecraft. Their YouTube spot "The A-Z of YouTube: Celebrating 10 Years" utilized 18 distinct animation styles, while their Wilkinson Sword "Manscaping in Motion" spot pioneered TimeSlice bullet-time camera arrays for stop-motion animation, winning Gold at Ciclope 2015. Music video clients include two for Katy Perry ("Harleys in Hawai'i" won the 2020 Webby People's Voice Award), They Might Be Giants, and Amanda Palmer. Hoku's storyboard-first workflow—hand-drawing every frame, building animatics in Premiere—reflects his animation-industry roots. He also works as editor, cinematographer, and VFX artist (Premiere, After Effects), and directed the PBS-broadcast documentary Upaj: Improvise. His horror comedy features festival screenings across the US and Europe, with work exhibited at LACMA and Centre Pompidou.
