Bio & background

Henry-Alex Rubin is an Academy Award–nominated documentary filmmaker and two-time Emmy-winning commercial director represented globally by SMUGGLER for approximately 17 years. His documentary *Murderball* (2005) won the Sundance Audience Award and earned an Oscar nomination, establishing his signature approach of capturing authentic emotion with real people. Rubin has directed over 100 commercials and amassed over 100 Cannes Lions, 44 Clios (including 3 Grand Clios), 40 D&AD Pencils, and 22 AICP Awards. His breakthrough work with Crispin Porter + Bogusky included Burger King's *Whopper Freakout* (which swept Cannes) and Domino's *Pizza Turnaround*, both employing hidden-camera documentary techniques. He has won two Emmys for Outstanding Commercial—both for Sandy Hook Promise—with *Back-to-School Essentials* (2019) also earning the inaugural Storytelling for Good Award at Sundance, the first advertising award presented by a major international film festival. His client roster spans Budweiser (multiple Super Bowl Clydesdale campaigns including 2024's *Old School Delivery*), Gatorade (*Made in NY* with Derek Jeter), Apple (*Heartstrings*, retweeted by Tim Cook), Dove (*Cost of Beauty*, inspiring 65,000+ petition signatures), Disney, Guinness, Google, Adidas, Volvo, the US Marine Corps, and the British Army. Rubin describes his work as "ads for people who hate ads," balancing commercial projects with PSA work on gun violence, bullying, and social media harm.
