Bio & background

Garth Davis is an Australian director known for meticulous visual craftsmanship and emotionally resonant storytelling across commercials, television, and features. After studying graphic design at Swinburne University of Technology, he joined Exit Films as an editor before transitioning to directing in the early 2000s. His commercial work for Schweppes, Coca-Cola, Xbox, PlayStation, Budweiser, and Lincoln earned a Gold Lion at Cannes and a D&AD Yellow Pencil in 2008, plus a DGA finalist nomination in 2010. He co-directed four episodes of the Emmy-winning miniseries Top of the Lake with Jane Campion, earning Emmy and BAFTA nominations. His 2016 feature debut Lion, starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, grossed over $140 million and received six Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Davis won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directing in a First-Time Feature Film and became the first director nominated in both DGA Feature Film categories in the same year. He directed Mary Magdalene in 2018 and the dystopian thriller Foe in 2023. Davis collaborates frequently with cinematographer Greig Fraser, employing natural lighting and precise framing. Currently working with RESET in the US, he is directing the first four episodes of Netflix's East of Eden starring Florence Pugh.
