F. Gary Gray is a film and commercial director whose 30-year career spans feature films, music videos, and advertising. He began as a cameraman for BET and Twentieth Television before directing over 30 music videos in the 1990s, earning a Grammy nomination and multiple MTV and Billboard awards for collaborations with Ice Cube, TLC, Dr. Dre, OutKast, Jay-Z, and Rick Ross. His Ice Cube video "It Was a Good Day" was named to Rolling Stone's Top 100 Videos of All Time, and TLC's "Waterfalls" won Video of the Year at the 1995 MTV VMAs. Gray's feature debut "Friday" (1995) became a cult classic, followed by box office successes including "The Italian Job" ($100M+ domestic), "Law Abiding Citizen" ($100M+ worldwide), "Straight Outta Compton" (No. 1 for three weeks), and "The Fate of the Furious" ($1.2B worldwide, the first film directed by an African American to cross that threshold). In commercials, working with RadicalMedia, Gray directed Pepsi's Super Bowl LVI film "The Call" starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar, and Mtn Dew Rise's LeBron James salsa spot via TBWA/Chiat/Day. He is an Academy member and was named to Free the Work's inaugural Super Bowl Shortlist in 2022.
