Doug Pray is a Los Angeles-based documentary filmmaker and commercial director, and a member of the DGA and AMPAS. He holds a BA in sociology from Colorado College and an MFA from UCLA’s School of Film and Television. Feature credits include Sundance premieres Hype! (1996), on Seattle grunge, and Scratch (2001), on turntablism and DJ culture; Art & Copy (2009), which won the 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Arts & Culture Programming; Surfwise; Big Rig; Infamy; Levitated Mass; and Love, Lizzo (2022, HBO Max). He was executive producer, writer, and editor on HBO’s The Defiant Ones (2018 Grammy for Best Music Film; multiple Emmy nominations) and worked on Netflix’s Arnold, Apple TV+’s Home, and TCM/Max’s The Power of Film. Represented in the US by Bob Industries, he directs documentary-style commercials and commissioned shorts for Guinness, Adidas, Toyota, Google (Project Re:Brief, Cannes premiere), Budweiser, ESPN (Feel Your Heart Race, later expanded into a TV program), Samsung, Xbox, Dr. Martens, RBC, Scion, iShares, Philips, PBS, CNIB, and Greenworks, plus a 2006 Emmy-winning HIV/AIDS awareness campaign. Branded work extends his verité, interview-driven portrait approach to real people and subcultures.
