Bio & background

Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are the married American directing duo known professionally as Dayton/Faris. They began collaborating after meeting at UCLA, first on MTV’s documentary series The Cutting Edge, then as music-video directors for the Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Korn, earning two Grammy Awards and nine MTV Video Music Awards. In 1998 they co-founded commercial production company Bob Industries in the US, where they remain rostered directors. Their advertising work includes campaigns for Apple, Old Spice, AT&T, Volkswagen, Sony PlayStation, Gap, Target, IKEA, the NBA, ESPN, Hewlett-Packard, BMW, State Farm, E-Trade, GE, Facebook, Sprint, DirecTV, Powerade, truth, iShares, and Moviefone. Standout spots include VW’s “Milky Way,” Sony PS2 “Gravity Bomb” (Clio and ANDY winners), celebrity-driven pieces with LeBron James and Jay-Z, and comedic or heartfelt work for E-Trade, Old Spice, and AT&T. Their feature debut Little Miss Sunshine (2006) won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, followed by Ruby Sparks (2012) and Battle of the Sexes (2017). They directed the full season of Netflix’s Living with Yourself and multiple episodes of Hulu’s Fleishman Is in Trouble, receiving a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing. Their commercial work emphasizes character-driven comedy, performance, and inventive visual storytelling carried from their music-video roots.
