Dave Ma is a commercial and music video director known for cinematic storytelling that captures real emotion and the tension between the tangible world and interior lives. Raised by a Chinese greyhound trainer and an Australian maternity nurse, Ma established himself in London's indie music scene as a photographer and director, shooting portraits of Nick Cave, TV On The Radio, Sonic Youth, and The 1975. He developed an extensive partnership with Foals, directing music videos including "Balloons," "Olympic Airways," and "Spanish Sahara," plus a live feature film at Royal Albert Hall. His music video for Flight Facilities' "Clair de Lune" has been seen by millions and remains his most complete personal work. Ma's commercial portfolio includes campaigns for Subaru, Nike, Cricket Australia, Rebel Sport, TSB, O2, Honda, Vodafone, and Nokia. His Rebel Sport "What's Your Why?" series featured Paralympian Sophie Pascoe and rugby star Malakai Fekitoa, the latter winning four Axis Awards in New Zealand. Ma earned multiple UKMVA nominations for his music video work and is influenced by Ron Fricke's Baraka, Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia, and Werner Herzog. He prefers natural locations over studio environments and maintains a hands-on DIY ethos. Ma splits time between Los Angeles and London and is working with FINCH in Australia and New Zealand.
