Bio & background

Darol Olu Kae is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker and artist working with Somesuch for commercial and music video work. His short film "i ran from it and was still in it" won the Pardino d'oro (Golden Leopard) at the 2020 Locarno Film Festival and Special Jury Recognition for Poetry at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, screening at Sundance, BlackStar, BAMcinemaFest, MoCA Los Angeles, and internationally. His recent work includes "Keeping Time" (2023), an audiovisual portrait of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra exhibited at the California African American Museum through January 2024, and "The Spirit of a Thing" (2023), a video installation exploring Louis Armstrong's 1965 East German tour, shown at Das Minsk in Potsdam. In commercial work, Kae has directed campaigns for Nike, including a recent A'ja Wilson ad, and for Greenpeace Germany, winning 2nd prize Giraffe at the Deutscher Werbefilmpreis for Green Production. He has collaborated with Kahlil Joseph on "BLKNWS" and A.G. Rojas on "Godchild" and Common's "Say Peace" music video. He has directed music videos for Serpentwithfeet and contributed to Sam Fender's "Play God." Kae is developing his debut narrative feature "Without a Song" with SunHaus, Arthur Jafa's production company. He was named a 2026 Los Angeles Artadia Awards Finalist.
