Bio & background

Craig Gillespie is an Australian-American director working with MJZ since 2000, with over 25 years of commercial directing experience. He has created award-winning campaigns for Apple, Nike, Snickers, Audi, FedEx, GEICO, Mercedes-Benz, Verizon, and the Obama 2008 presidential campaign. His Snickers Super Bowl XLIV spot featuring Betty White was voted top ad by USA Today. Gillespie won the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials in 2006 for Ameriquest and Altoids, and earned the Golden Lion at Cannes Lions in 2005. He has received DGA nominations every few years through 2023 for spots including Apple's "Waiting Room" and "Hard Knocks," Nissan "Thrill Driver," and Jimmy John's "Problem." Two of his commercials are held in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. Before directing, Gillespie worked as an art director and creative director at J. Walter Thompson, BBDO, and Deutsch. He maintains an active dual career in features and television, having directed I, Tonya (2017), Cruella (2021), and Hulu's Pam & Tommy (2022), while continuing to direct commercials for blue-chip brands. His commercial work is known for sharp, offbeat comedy balanced with grounded, character-driven storytelling.
