Claas Ortmann is a Hamburg-based commercial director specializing in offbeat, character-driven comedy with high cinematic polish. Born 19 April 1979 in Hamburg, he shot early Hi8 gangster shorts after Pulp Fiction and 1990s MTV-era videos (Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, David Fincher), then studied feature directing and screenwriting at HFF Munich. His commercial career accelerated with the 2013 Cannes Young Directors Award for “Pin Card”/“Kartensicherheit.” He has directed comedy spots for Hyundai, Volkswagen, Audi, Dacia, Coke/Coke Zero, McDonald’s, Axe, Philips, Yelp, ING, Eurowings, Jägermeister, KPT, Allianz, Aktion Mensch, Beiersdorf, Media Markt, Brother, Hidrofugal, Busuu and EuroMillionen. Standout work includes Philips OneBlade films (“Dilemma,” “Crown Jewels”) with Epic Awards recognition, Yelp comedies, Eurowings “Clichees,” ING “Dallas,” Hidrofugal “Tommy,” and recent Jägermeister Orange “Surprise” and KPT “Tennis” spots. Trade and roster copy highlight razor-sharp comedic timing, compelling character-building, incredible sets, and epic cinematic craft. He is working with Sparks (North America), Tony Petersen Film and Zauberberg (Germany), 100% (Amsterdam, 2025) and Rattling Stuff/Rattling Stick (UK, 2026), and co-founded DRCT, the German directors’ association that pushed paid pitches.
