Christopher Nelius is an Australian director working across commercials, documentary, and drama, working with FINCH in Australia and New Zealand. A former touring rock guitarist and AFTRS-trained sound designer, Nelius transitioned from composing music for ads and features to directing, bringing a musician's sensitivity to rhythm and emotion into his visual storytelling. His feature documentary Storm Surfers 3D won the AACTA Award for Best Feature Documentary and a prize at TIFF 2012. Girls Can't Surf became the highest-grossing Australian documentary of 2021, earning an AACTA nomination and global distribution after premiering at Tribeca and Sydney Film Festival. His latest documentary Whistle premiered at TIFF 2025 and DOC NYC, employing mockumentary techniques borrowed from The Office and Christopher Guest films. Nelius's commercial work includes campaigns for Victoria Bitter with Droga5, Medibank, Rebel, Australian Government Department of Education, Audi, Chevrolet Silverado, AFL, Mercedes, and Fight MND. He co-founded The Lion's Share Fund with FINCH's Rob Galluzzo, winning the Cannes Lions Grand Prix for Sustainable Development Goals 2019 and raising over sixteen million dollars for wildlife conservation. Nelius emphasizes surprise and spontaneity in his work, describing his approach as serving the idea through casting, performance, and collaboration rather than manufactured spectacle.
