Bio & background

Chris Smith is a documentary filmmaker and commercial director globally working with SMUGGLER. He won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival for "American Movie," which Sony Pictures Classics acquired for $1 million and which later received the Cinema Eye Honors Legacy Award. His Netflix documentaries include "Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened" (Emmy nomination), "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond" (Emmy and Venice Film Festival nominations), "Sr." (co-directed with Kevin Ford), "Wham!", and "Mr. McMahon". As executive producer on "Tiger King," he helped create Netflix's most-streamed series at the time. For HBO, he created the Emmy-winning three-season docuseries "100 Foot Wave" (2023 Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography, 2025 Emmy for Outstanding Documentary Series). His commercial work includes campaigns for Geico (featuring Burt Bacharach and Don LaFontaine), Heineken, Esurance (Super Bowl ad with John Krasinski), Volkswagen, Pacific Bell, Qwest, Cingular Wireless, Comcast, and Intuit, earning multiple Cannes Lions. Agencies hire him for comedy and dialogue-driven spots characterized by pristine timing and offbeat humor. He attended University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Graduate Film Program and served as cinematographer on Michael Moore's "The Big One."
