Cathrine Wessel is a Norwegian-born director and photographer whose career bridges still photography and motion storytelling across fashion, sports, beauty, and lifestyle. After studying documentary photography at the International Center of Photography under Mary Ellen Mark, Ralph Gibson, and Cornell Capa (1987-1988), Wessel spent six years assisting New York photographers before launching her independent practice. Her early work included music photography at CBGB's and album covers for 311, Boyz II Men, and New Kids on the Block, followed by editorial assignments for Spanish Vogue, L'Uomo Vogue, Elle, and Condé Nast Traveler. Transitioning to commercial directing in the mid-2000s, Wessel has created campaigns for Reebok (including the Gigi Hadid "Perfect Never" series, earning three One Eyeland Photography Awards finalist placements in 2017), Adidas, Nike, The North Face, Under Armour, Neutrogena, and Essie. Her 2023 "Live Your Colour" spot for Essie transformed a cold London winter shoot into a vibrant summer aesthetic. Wessel's documentary-influenced approach prioritizes authentic emotional moments and natural light over staged perfection. Her fine-art practice includes the "Wildflowers" series (2003-2010) documenting adolescence and "Stolen Moments" exhibitions. She is currently working with Fresh Film for UK, Czech Republic, Thailand, and US markets.
