Cary Joji Fukunaga is an American filmmaker and commercial director represented in the US by Anonymous Content. A UC Santa Cruz history graduate and NYU Tisch MFA alumnus, he won a Student Academy Award for the short Victoria para Chino and the Sundance Dramatic Directing Award for feature debut Sin Nombre (2009). He directed Jane Eyre (2011); wrote, produced and shot Beasts of No Nation (2015); and directed and co-wrote EON’s No Time to Die (2021), the first American-helmed official James Bond film. In television he directed all eight episodes of HBO’s True Detective Season 1, winning the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, plus all ten episodes of Netflix’s Maniac (2018) and multiple episodes of Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air (2024). He co-wrote It (2017). Commercial work includes Levi’s “America,” Budweiser “Gather Together,” PlayStation “The World Is In Play,” a 2020 Land Rover Defender spot tied to No Time to Die, and Samsung’s 2016 “A Perfect Day.” He works through Parliament of Owls; signature elements include kinetic tracking shots, immersive locales and performance-driven drama across cinema, series and brand films.
