Bio & background

Anthea Benton is a British director working with Fresh Film across the UK, Czech Republic, Thailand, and the United States, best known for award-winning campaigns for Levi's and Stella Artois. She began her career in fashion design as a milliner before transitioning to directing in 1982 as half of the duo Vaughan and Anthea, pioneering music video work for George Michael, Take That, Jamiroquai, and Simply Red. The duo moved into commercials in 1991 with Wrangler's "DJ"—the first European television spot to feature rap music and an all-African American cast—expanding modernist music culture into narrative advertising. Their Levi's "Creek" won two D&AD Pencils (Best Direction, Best Commercial), a Cannes Gold Lion, and Grand Prix at the British Television Advertising Awards in 1994; Stella Artois's "New Shoes" earned a 1997 D&AD Silver. After splitting in 1996, Benton resumed solo directing in 1998, producing campaigns for Peugeot, Hyundai, Nissan, Barclaycard, Sony, Vodafone, and Pepto-Bismol. Her 2003 Hyundai spot using the Velvet Underground's "I'm Sticking with You" won the Music Publishers Association award for best use of pop music. Benton's work blends strong art direction, fashion awareness, and performance-driven storytelling, with recent credits including Vodafone's iPhone 12 "Anticipation" (2020) and Pepto-Bismol's "Greasy Spoon" musical (2024).
