Bio & background

Alma Har'el is an award-winning director whose work spans premium commercials, narrative features, documentaries, and music videos. She became the first woman to direct a Stella Artois ad with "Isabella" (2016), and in 2018 directed Coca-Cola's Super Bowl commercial "The Wonder of Us" and P&G's Winter Olympics spot "Thank You, Mom," which earned her a solo DGA nomination—only the second woman ever recognized in the commercial category. Her Chanel x i-D short film "JellyWolf" (2017) won awards at Ciclope, Clio, D&AD, and Tribeca X. She has directed campaigns for Coach, Airbnb (the brand's first two campaigns including "Views" in 2012), Xfinity, HP, Corona, Facebook, and The Farmer's Dog. Her documentary "Bombay Beach" won Best Feature Documentary at Tribeca (2011) and is taught at Harvard and NYU. Her narrative debut "Honey Boy" (2019) won the Sundance Special Jury Prize and made her the first woman to win the DGA Award for First-Time Feature Film. She created and directed all episodes of Apple TV+'s "Lady in the Lake" (2024) starring Natalie Portman. In 2016, she founded Free the Bid, which evolved into Free the Work in 2019, reshaping industry hiring practices with founding partners including P&G, Amazon Studios, Facebook, and AT&T. She is currently working with Epoch Films (US/UK) and Somesuch (UK).
