Bio & background

Allen Hughes is an American director and producer whose commercial work includes Nike’s 2002 “Funk Ship” spot and Nike work with LeBron James, Gatorade with Usain Bolt, Reebok’s “I Am What I Am” campaign (featuring skateboarder Stevie Williams), and Best Buy with the Black Eyed Peas. He has cited ease with basketball- and football-world spots and a preference for early creative involvement on narrative, filmic commercials. As one half of the Hughes Brothers with twin Albert, he co-directed Menace II Society (1993, Cannes premiere), Dead Presidents (1995), From Hell (2001) with Johnny Depp, and The Book of Eli (2010) starring Denzel Washington. Solo and later credits include Broken City (2013), HBO’s The Defiant Ones (2017) on Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, and FX/Hulu’s Dear Mama (2023) on Tupac and Afeni Shakur. He holds multiple Primetime Emmy nominations and Peabody nominee status. He signed with Believe Media for commercials in May 2012; film/TV representation includes WME. In 2022 he was attached to direct a Snoop Dogg biopic for Universal/Death Row Pictures.
