Alexander Payne is a two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker who made his commercial directing debut in 2019 with Apple's "Privacy Matters" campaign. Known for sardonic, character-driven storytelling that blends dark humor with quiet emotional truths, Payne brings the same intelligence and documentary-like sense of place to commercial work as he does to his critically acclaimed features including Sideways, The Descendants, and Nebraska. He won back-to-back Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sideways (2004) and The Descendants (2011), and has earned five additional Academy Award nominations including Best Director for Sideways, The Descendants, and Nebraska. His advertising portfolio includes campaigns for Apple, Hotels.com, and Montefiore Einstein healthcare, for which he directed Paul Giamatti in a 2024 survivor story film. A Stanford graduate with an MFA from UCLA Film School, Payne is working with RadicalMedia in the U.S. and is known for his restraint, empathy, and exploration of ordinary lives with wit and humanity. He served as Chairperson of the Venice Film Festival in 2025.
